2019 Excellence in Classroom Teaching Award

Every lecture has a theme to bring lightness and help students stay interested - past themes include sloths, Lord of the Rings, Lego Batman, puppies and kittens, and of course baby Yoda.

My first class was taught during the Covid-19 outbreak and we transitioned to remote learning for the second half of the semester. To hopefully add smiles to my students' now strange days, I matched my zoom background to each theme. A student emailed me the meme to the left, sharing their support of my LOTR theme after they had just finished reading The Hobbit.

In teaching systems engineering, I want to ignite joy and curiosity in my students. My path towards this goal was validated with the excellence in classroom teaching award from NC State's GSA.
